This podcast explains our grave concerns about how the Modern Slavery Act 2015 frames human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation. It asks how this legislation could have been passed when it so spectacularly fails to meet binding obligations under international law and shows that as a result, there is a failure to deal effectively with the forms of human trafficking that particularly affect women and children, and that this has profound implications for how society understands prostitution and how the criminal justice system deals (or fails to deal) with it. This is the text of our submission to the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade’s inquiry into ‘pop-up’ brothels. We argue that pop-up brothels are not a new phenomenon, permanent brothels are operating with impunity all over the country, prostitution is damaging to both individual and community, the UK is not meeting its international obligations in this area, the police too often pursue vulnerable women involved in prostitution rather than the ruthless profiteers, and we provide 13 recommendations for a complete overhaul of the law and policy. The viral spread of the #MeToo hashtag over the last few weeks and the accompanying avalanche of women’s testimony of sexual harassment has spread to the British political establishment. In this article we draw parallels and connections between sexual harassment and assault, and prostitution, and we call for a new code of conduct for MPs and parliamentary staff that includes a prohibition against prostitution-buying as well as sexual harassment and assault, just as the UN does for its staff. Why I campaign against the sex trade
Not even that hot night when I was 19 and slept with the door to my stuffy windowless room open to catch the breeze caused the blinkers to fall from my eyes. Street Harassment and Prostitution: Making the Connections
Nordic Model Now! wrote a letter to London (UK) mayor, Sadiq Khan, after women in the Leyton area told us about the alarming levels of street harassment in their area and how this had coincided with a proliferation of advertising of prostitution in the area. There are stickers advertising brothels on more or less every lamp post. On Wednesday 29 June 2016, four members of Nordic Model Now! went to City Hall to deliver the letter. Read More
Young women’s daily reality in east London
A young woman called Tellie contacted us to ask if we had stickers to put over the adverts for prostituted women that get put up on all the lamp posts and phone boxes in her area of east London. She said she spends hours pulling them off but within a few days they’re back again. Read More
